First Steps ? Making all the Right Choices
What comes first, second, third, and so on?
So you want to more power, better handling, stronger braking, and a ?badder? truck but you don?t have a ton of cash right now.
Can you only do steps 1 or 2 right now, but want to make sure you do not spend money in the future fixing a mistake you make right now because of your limited budget?
Well, have we some good news for you! Make the right choices/decisions/purchases now and you won?t be thinking down the road ?what if?! It even works in life :^).
Here, we will lay out a couple of alternative paths and help to set you on the right one for you budget and performance goals.
From exhaustive research, the top Three performance items to start with are:
- Engine (Making more power/torque)
- Gauges
- Wheels/Tires
Most enthusiast will go in the order listed above (the order is a natural progression. For example, you may want larger wheels/tires before you upgrade your engine...but everyone has their preferences and may choose a different order).
Let's break them down...(click to each sections for more detailed information)
There are a couple of routes to take depending on your budget and goals. The main three options are:
- Exhaust
System
- Cold Air Intake or High Flow Filter
- Engine
Management
Though a complete turbo back exhaust system can be a little pricey, it is perhaps the best first step. While a Cat-Back is a good start, a turbo back
system is the solid foundation you need for all future power upgrades.
After you increase the engines ability to exhale, increase its ability to inhale with a cold air intake or a high flow filter.
Steps 1 and 2 increase the engine's ability to flow air. Step 3, Engine Management, makes use of this increased air by adding more fuel, boost, and adjusting the "timing" of combustion.
That means, if you follow up the Exhaust System and Intake with some well tuned engine management, and you can typically increase horsepower 60-110 ponies with an even larger increase in torque!
I love the look on the face of the hopped up Honda Civic owner when he has just been dusted by a Truck!
Gauges
Gauges are critical any time you ask more from you vehicle...from towing to running increased horsepower/torque.
Gauges are essentially your vehicles health monitors and tell you when you are developing a problem before it's too late.
Wheels and Tires
Wheels and Tires can be a very personal thing. Not only do a wheels/tires upgrade separate your truck from "stockers" they provide a significant improvement in handling...on or off road.
